This time I decided to rent out a private theater for all of us to sit and have a movie marathon! This writing challenge starts today and closes on March 30th! I will be traveling the last week of March and it would be the perfect time for me to catch up on reading all the entries (since I read & reblog every fic submitted). I think I always assumed the works tagged like this were kind of like the people using "dead dove: do not eat" as an emphatic tag*. Like the fact that these two characters are fake-dating has warped the original setting to an extraordinary degree, or the reconfiguration that had to happen to support the fake-dating thing has turned it into an AU.

Like, imagine, if you will, a Jeeves & Wooster in which every single one of the shenanigans and 99% of the hoopla can all be traced back to a collaborative years-running scheme by all the bright young things, 'facilitated' by Bertie, to get out from under the thumbs of their meddling aunts forever by pretending to have an understanding with, or at least be keen on in a reciprocated way, an appropriate and approved-of member of the opposite sex.

Can any of them keep their stories straight? Absolutely not. Is it causing ten times the commotion of just telling their parents 'no'? Absolutely yes. Are people having real arguments about whether or not they could be fake-dating a particular person? Indubitably. Have friendships been ended over who gets to say they're fake-dating whom? Multiple times per fortnight. Has Jeeves had to smooth things over with a girl Bertie is very much not really dating because she can't be seen as dating him while he's acting like an ass, and it's a matter of pride not to be for-real dumped by someone he's fake-dating? Of course.

Is anyone ever really dating? None of the participants can have a normal romantic relationship anymore because the fake ones have a certain je ne sais quoi that real ones simply lack.

"No one will believe I have an understanding with Honoria Glossop unless I make a good showing at the club!"

"Surely Honoria saying that you have an understanding would be enough?"

"No! They'll all tut and grumble that she'll come to her senses before too long if I don't come up to scratch!"

None of it's out of keeping with canon, but I think at that point you get to call it a fake-dating AU.

*ie, if you're tagging a PWP with "watersports" and "DD:DNE", it might not necessarily be dark or super fucked up or anything but it is definitely by and for people who are very, very, very into watersports.

Is it just me or has a lot of fandom forgotten what "AU" means? It's short for Alternate Universe. I keep seeing people talking about, like, "fake dating AU" or "only one bed AU." Unless your characters exist in a world where a) beds don't exist or b) beds exist in such abundance there could not POSSIBLY be only one of them, that's not an AU. It's just a regular degular story.

Shadow Company OC #2

Talofa everyone! I proudly would like to share another masterpiece that I got from @temeyes! Another Art Commission that I have requested from her! But before I showed this to you. I know most of you already know that OCs aren't Canon Characters. Even When making an OC that is like CHILDREN for the Canon Characters. Which it's FINE! And awesome too! Love those kinds of OCs that are connected with the Canons.

But this one is a bit different for me. Because the OC that I'm going to show you is actually related to the Canon who is like BLOOD SIBLING likes. And I gotta tell you. There are some online 'friends' that I've made a long time ago (I cut them off since they were complaining too much about how I made my OCs). That they were not very thrilled with how I made my OCs who are BLOOD RELATED to the family, like being siblings or cousins. Instead of putting my OCs as being the future CHILDREN. It kinda really put me down that I started to erase those OCs and just never mention them again.

It kinda hurts me sometimes and it's hard for me to make some OCs again. But after a few years, my OTHER good online friend, which is @forestgreenbunny, showed me the COD MW2. I have been so obsessed with it that I started to make OCs from it. And when I saw Graves on screen and watched him how he acted in every single scene. I just started to have an idea of giving him a sibling. The one who he will spoil rotten with! But…it started to taunt me again about my past experience showing someone my ideas. Except Bunny here had always shared me with their OCs so I thought that I could show her mine. And she had made me happy about it because she likes the ideas of having the OCs actually related to the Canon characters. Just need to make sure to let everyone know about it.

So...if you guys are interested. Here is my Shadow Company OC! Everyone! I would like for you to meet Graves's Sister!

Lieutenant Callie "Snipe" Graves!

One of the members of the Shadow Company and also Commander Graves's sister!

Before I continue on with this. How old do you guys think she is huh? Lol.

Anyway, Callie has the same personality as her older brother and she always admired him the most. From her childhood, she always looked up to him and wanted to be like him as well. She also saw him as their father's favorite. She doesn't pay much attention to it as she was focusing on being just like Phillip.

She had also wanted her father's attention but didn't get any for some reason. It upsets her most of the time but she forgets about it when Phillip came in and gave HIS attention to her instead. She loved her older brother and would follow him all the way till the end.

So she went with him to join the Marines Corps and later on joined in the Shadow Company. You could imagine that Phillip and Callie are like the most obnoxious duo in this world. Cocky enough to now care for ANYTHING or ANYONE. And will always get the things that they wanted.

You can say that Phillip's attitude had really become bad intentions for Callie. But she doesn't care. As long as she stays with her brother. Everything will be hell of a life! do you respond to comments? I try very hard to respond to every single comment while posting a fic, or if it's a one-shot, every comment within the first three days. Beyond that, I really struggle.

what's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending? The Eighth Tale. I end most things either open or happy, but this is a time travel story, and the point is that there are infinite endings. But the ending we do get is pretty sad.

what's the fic you've written with the happiest ending? The End Resting Only On Air. This is actually the ending of a series. There is neither rejoicing nor throwing bouquets in the air, but I think it might be the only time I've written a ship getting married and having a long established relationship. I'm really proud of this fic, because they are really, really, really happy, but there isn't an ounce of it that feels sappy to me. (It's a complete AU, so readable if you don't know the fandom, and it can also stand alone within the series.)

what's a wip that you want to finish but don't think you ever will? Right now I have two big ones. One is for CQL/MDZS and is LWJ/WWX arranged marriage secret identity. The other is for The Original Series of Star Trek and also the Alternate Original Series, and has Kirk/Spock undertones but is probably gen, in which AOS!Spock switches places with TOS!Spock and TOS!Kirk has to deal with him. I have 40K written of each.

what are your writing strengths? dialogue, a tight closed third person POV, and I don't know how else to say this, but intensity

what are your writing weaknesses? maintaining interest long enough to write an ending, repetition/concision, syntactic variation, description

what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? I think that if you're going to write a story about language, multilingualism, the experience of being multilingual or how being multilingual shapes one's life, it's a great idea to use those languages in the text. I doubt I'd write those stories, though I'm deeply interested in languages. Since I write such a tight POV, if the POV character doesn't understand the language they will not be able to clearly hear/differentiate every word, so I wouldn't write the othr language, and if the POV character does understand the language, I would write it as translated into the POV character's language so that we the reader can understand precisely what the POV character understands.

what's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to? I'm interested in Mo Ran/Chu Wanning, but I need to get a complete translation of canon first.

Ok so while yes, City of Mist is incredibly simple to play in actual practice, it does have a LOT more character management rules than most PBTAs, and the Tracking Card system is something you really have to see in practice to understand.

Plus, while it's my understanding that the divided Player Handbook and MC Toolkit clarified a handful of things that were missing or unclear in the original Tome, I was not gonna spend $70 on two books to replace my single $50 one, and besides, we had started before Knights of Payne Town crowdfunded.

So long story short, there were a handful of things that, when we started, I was unclear on how they worked, and what their limits were supposed to be, and so I, wanting to be a "Good DM" (my only other experience at that point was D&D 5E) decided, "power to the players!" and let players add as many tags as they wanted to rolls.

(legitimately, the only point in the original tome I could find that said there was a 3-power tag-limit was a play example, it wasn't in the base rules in the gameplay section! Apparently it was buried somewhere I wouldn't have thought to look, but I didn't know that until much later when I was talking about something in the Facebook group.)

I also was kinda lax about the single-scene effects of some moves, because it came up so rarely. And, on the MC side, I was so nervous about not using stuff after over-preparing scenarios for the first few sessions that I'd developed a habit of delaying stuff until the party had a chance to arrive.

For the most part, I was still able to make an engaging adventure by taking advantage of what you could do with NPCs' power tags/statuses, but then The Incident happened.

Now, there were probably some other contributing factors here. First, one of my players had recently joined a D&D table, and between that and the way I'd handled my table, he was starting to develop an attitude that I was supposed to indulge anything he wanted to do so long as he rolled a Great Success. And for reasons I still don't understand, the entire party had chosen to just straight-up ignore information one of their allies had given them, opting to spend the rest of the session trying to find some other piece of evidence to back up what he was saying, but weren't satisfied with whatever I gave them.

As written, the Investigation move in CoM says that you can ask as many questions as you have Power invested on a Great Success. So this dude dumped 6 power tags into an Investigate, and spent an hour dragging it across 3 locations, upset I wasn't giving him the answers he wanted, but not telling me what he wanted to learn beyond "what are we supposed to do next," but like the rest of the party, was unwilling to accept "you already know where your target will be next. The lead you were given was real!" I ended up having to call the session early, I was so mad.

That player might have still developed the attitude that I needed to indulge every success, especially after joining the D&D game, but if I had trusted the samples in the book and every other sample of play I'd heard elsewhere, then he would have gotten 3 questions, max. If I had restricted his investigation to a single scene like I knew I was supposed to, he wouldn't have been able to drag it out for an hour.

And if I'd followed the general PBTA GM principle of "treat the world like it's alive and the story doesn't solely revolve around your players," they would have simply seen that they weren't being lied to on the news after their target did what they knew she was going to do, in the place they knew she was going to be, and got away because they were all wasting time elsewhere.

They still wouldn't have been happy, probably, but there's not much I can do about that, since they wouldn't tell me why they were rejecting clues like that.

Yes, that's the short version of events.

It ain't easy making it as a TTRPG design studio when it takes a baseline amount of effort just to convince a lot of people that your profession is even real. Like, those rules and numbers, we didn't just fill the pages up with a bunch of random nonsense, we put those in the rulebook for a reason, so that following them would result in particular challenges and experiences.

Game design is real! It is possible to play a TTRPG wrong, because the TTRPG's rulebook exists solely to tell you how to play this particular TTRPG right, and in a well-designed game, that will lead to a particular experience that the authors are trying to sell you.

I've written every single reader insert fic that exists of my favorite character and while I'm proud of myself for filling out a previously non-existent tag/ship in AO3, I wish other people would write about him too because it's lonely not having anyone else to talk about him with and I'm super curious what other people think about him (assuming anyone else is a fan of him, so far, I've never met anyone else who likes him.)

It's the same fucking franchise. That's like making a new Doctor Who Fandom tag for every single doctor. And if this was to show a distinction by era, then why did this not start after End Game or hell, after TFATWS? It's segregation within the tag for no reason. And all fics, whether or not they're set post-Endgame, have automatically been tagged Captain America (Chris Evans) lazily whether or not they're actually within that era, even if they have additional tags stating they're not. There are ways to easily search out different movies already without changing the fandom tag or splitting it. It's bad practice. It's weird that it's happening now. And frankly, it's a bad look to suddenly segregate a tag just because a Black man is playing the same name character within the same franchise of movies. Most Sam Wilson fans aren't happy with this structural racism either, so it feels weird that you're trying to explain this shit when I didn't ask for that on my fucking post. It feels tactless and you're really not reading the room.

on a more serious note i know ad astra as a whole isnt over but i still want to thank daybreaker for their fics. what friends are for was the very first md fic i ever stumbled upon when trying out ao3 for the first time, and prior to joining the server i was checking it near daily for uploads. god knows if i'd be as deep in ao3 as i am now if it werent for this story and convenient timing. Thanks for the story.

I've only been on Tumblr for half a year so I don't have enough stuff to make a year round-up, but I still wanted to go over some of my favorite arts since coming to Tumblr 🤔

So here it is!

Some of my favorites, coz I had to chose only 10. I'm actually quite proud of so many illustrations and comics. Couldn't place the few OB!N2, no Najma either, I wanted to put so much more :'D

The one thing I'll add though is the collaboration with @aria-faye. It's still going on but I'm really proud of us (and mostly them) for it!

All that to say, it's been a super productive half a year! I don't think I've drawn that much since art school, and even then it was because I had to.

It was a fun half a year.

Hopefully next year I'll get to do the "one drawing per month" thingy.
